What Kind of Drummer Are You?

Before we rate what kind of drummer you are, we need to know what type of drums you have. Click here to find out what model you have.

(Rock Band 2 wireless drums are velocity senstive and so the style of play is not as important as it is with the older QM, EL and SL models. Even the softest hit will register, and the pads are tough enough that an aggressive drummer will find them much more durable.)

Aggressive

If you are this type of drummer, then you hit 'em and hit 'em hard! You need more speed and to get more speed you come down on those pads as hard as you can. Sometimes you worry about breaking the plastic underneath the pads, but you're more concerned about missing the double beats on Tom Sawyer.

If this is you and you have a QM set then you can't go wrong with one of the rubber pads. Dual Neoprene will protect your set and might even stop any double beats your drum may register by mistake on the rapid drum rolls. Gum Rubber would also be a good choice because it offers the protection but is a little softer to cushion your hands. The absolute best pad will be the Micro-Cellular Urethane Dual pad, which has a layer of neoprene under the cushion of the softer Urethane.

If you have an EL set, we recommend the Micro-Cellular Urethane in the thin form or the Closed Cell Foam. Both of these options will allow you to keep as much sensitivity as possible while still protecting your drums.

Technical

Maybe you don't hit the drums very hard, but you strive to be VERY precise. If you know your ranking on the leader board or have FC'ed a song (Actually, if you know what FC stands for) this is probably you (It stands for Full Combo).

Technical drummers can't afford to lose ANY sensitivity in their drumming. For these players, protection and sound is not as important as not having to hit the drum any harder. If you are this type of drummer and have a QM set, the best answer for you is any of our Micro-Cellular Urethane pads (But not the dual layer). Single layer gum rubber is good for you too, because it gives the drum a more professional feel.

If you have a EL set and wish to add a drum pad protector, you may wish to check your set first and make sure the sensitivity isn't slipping. Many of the EL sets will drop notes after several months. If your set is dropping any notes, consider taking advantage of Rock Band's generous return policy and getting the more sensitive QM drums through the return policy. If your EL set is not dropping any notes, we recommend that you still restrict your pad to a thin single layer, preferably the thin Micro-Cellular Urethane.
